Capitalisation and spelling as in the original}. John was the landlord of the 'Farriers Arms' (Blacksmiths Arms above) in Mersham, which is still in operation and, after his death, was operated by his eldest son, Edward.[11,12] By 1855 the license for the inn was held by Richard Chamberlain.[12] John was described variously as a farrier and publican - these two trades were often closely linked at many country inns, with the need of farrier services by travellers arriving by horse or carriage.[12] This was certainly the case with the "Farrier's Arms", where the landlord was also a farrier.[12] It is unknown which came first, the farrier or the inn, however there appears to have been a blacksmith on the site since at least 1600.[12] John married Lydia[11] Whiting 11/10/1752, St John the Baptist, Mersham, Kent.[2-4] Lydia was born 1728,[15] baptised 5/3/1728, St John the Baptist, Mersham, Kent,[10] died 19/2/1785[15] and 26/2/1785, St John the Baptist, Mersham, Kent.[12,15] Children of John Back and Lydia Whiting: i. William Back, baker[11] and confectioner,[8] was born 23/7/1780 in Ashford, Kent,[1] and baptised 23/7/1780, St Mary Ashford.[2,3,10] Died 19/4/1855 in Kingsland, London.[1] According to family records William was related to Admiral Sir George Back, the famous Arctic explorer (see, for example [26]). An investigation of Sir George's genealogy has failed to reveal an obvious connection. Married Ann Eastes 19/2/1805 in Folkstone, Kent.[1,4,11] At the time of the marriage Ann resided Hythe, Kent, and William resided Folkestone, Kent.[11] Bond was posted by Richard Eastes of Hythe, Ann's brother.[11] Ann was born 2/8/1780 Ashford,[1,5] died 8/1854,[1] and was buried 15/8/1854, Folkestone, Kent,[24] In 1832 William was a baker and confectioner, living on Dover St, Folkestone.[13] In 1841 & 1851 the family was living at Dover St, Folkestone.[24] Children of William Back and Ann Eastes: i. Thomas Back, born 12/1805, baptised 1/1/1806 in Folkestone, Kent.[1,6] Married Ann Mary Wolley 11/7/1835 at Christ Church, Greyfriars Newgate, City of London, London.[5] In 1881 Thomas & Ann were living at 46 Lansdowne Gdns, Lambeth, Surrey.[25] Thomas' occupation was listed as "H E I Co Service Retired".[25] Living with them were 4 unmarried daughters, their son, Edward, Thomas' widowed sister, Lydia, and a servant. Children: Frances Ann (1836), Emily (1838), Mary Elizabeth (1840) all St Lukes, Finsbury, London, William (1848) of Stepney, London,[5,25] Edward B. (1849) and Helena (1851) of Lambeth, Surrey.[25] ii. Sarah Back, born 21/12/1806, baptised 13/1/1807 in Folkestone, Kent.[1,6] Died 2/3/1868.[1] Married William Madison 9/3/1834 at St Dionis Backchurch, City of London.[5] iii. Ann Back, born 12/1/1809, baptised 8/3/1809 in Folkestone, Kent.[1,6] Died 19/6/1866, Mall House, Hammersmith, Middlesex.[14] (Transcription from a family bible gives 6/1867.[1]). Cause of death was "epilepsy some years paralysis certified".[14] In 1881 Mall House was a mental asylum and it is likely it was the same in 1866 as at this time those with epilepsy were generally placed in asylums. Informant was Mary Hannah, also resident of Mall House.[14] (Mary was presumably part of the staff at the asylum). Married Sir Francis Pettit Smith 2/12/1830, Folkestone, Kent.[4,7,12,24] Francis was born 8/2/1808, at 31 High Street, Hythe, Kent,[17,20,24] and died 12/2/1874,[12,17,20,24] 15 Thurloe Place, Kensington (now the London House of Science Museum),[12,19,24] & buried Brompton Cemetery, London,[12,16] In the 1820's Francis was a grazier (farmer) at Romney Marsh, Kent.[24] In 1834 he was a grazier at Hythe, Kent.[24] In the late 1830's he was a farmer at Gutters Hedge Farm, Hendon, Kent.[24] In 1841 lived Poplar, Middlesex.[24] In 1848 Francis was living St John's Wood, London & he was employed at the Steam Department, Somerset House.[24] Latter 1848 the family was living at St Margaret at Cliffe.[24] In 1855 he was granted a pension of 200 pounds pa from the Queen's Civil List.[24] In 1856 his patent expired and he was farming in Guernsey, Channel Islands.[24] Sir Francis was appointed acting curator of the British Museum of Patents, South Kensington, 15/9/1860,[24] and on 1/1/1861 was appointed as the third curator museum, with an annual salary of 400 pounds, in which position he remained until his death.[22,24] Sir Francis was instrumental in the aquisition of a number of important exhibits.[22] In 1864 he changed the name to 'The Patent Office Museum.'[22] A signed letter survives which was written by Sir Francis on 5/4/1862 to Mrs. Haden concerning news of her husband in India.[23] The letter was addressed from the Museum of Patents.[23] In 1861 Francis was living at 2 Sumner Place with Susannah Wallis, Susannah being listed as his wife (although they did not marry until Francis' first wife died in 1866).[24] In 1866 living Alexander Square, Brompton, 1871 15 Thurloe Place, London, where he remained until his death.[24] His will was proven 5/3/1874.[24] Francis was a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institute of Naval Architects, the Royal Society of Arts for Scotland and the American Institute.[24] Francis was knighted in 1871 for his invention of the four bladed screw propeller for ships,[16,17] for which he received a British patent 31/5/1836,[17,20,24] and which which was adopted by the Royal Navy.[12] The discovery was serendipitous - in 1837 he was experimenting with a particular design when, during the test, half of it broke off yet the ship then travelled significantly faster.[21,24] In May, 1840, Sir Francis fitted and demonstrated his propeller on the 237-ton 'Archimedes' at Bristol,[19,20] which was launched 18/10/1838.[24] The ship had previously been tested at Portsmouth by the Royal Navy, where it proved to be faster than the naval paddle steamer, HMS Vulcan.[24] In 1843 the first naval ship with Sir Francis' propeller was launched, the HMS Rattler.[24] From 1841 to 1842 the Archimedes toured ports in Britian and mainland Europe.[24] The Bristol demonstration sufficiently impressed Isambard Brunel that he fitted the 'Great Britain', then under construction, with Sir Frances' propeller design.[19] The 'Great Britain' was the first iron-hulled ship and, in it's day, was the largest ship ever constructed.[19] It saw service from 1845 until 1937 when it was scuttled offshore from the Falkland Islands.[19] In 1970 the hulk was refloated, moved to Bristol and restored to her heyday appearance as an ocean liner.[19] Brunel initially fitted the ship with a 6-bladed propeller, but that was soon replaced by a 4-bladed propeller in 1846.[19] It is interesting to note that Sir Francis named his experimental ship the 'Archimedes' and also had a grandson by that name. It is probable, in fact nearly certain, that Sir Francis' invention was inspired by the work of the ancient Greek philosopher Archimedes, who, among other things, invented the Archimedes Screw, a device for moving water uphill - the reverse of the propeller. Francis was worn out by the worry of perfecting his invention and this was attributed as the cause of his early death.[12] Francis was also involved in a lawsuit with George Blaxland over who was the inventor of the screw propeller.[18] Whilst the government recognised both claims with monetary awards, Sir Francis eventually received the patent and the knighthood.[18] After the death of his first wife, Ann Back, Francis remarried to Susannah Wallis of Boxley,[12,15] 3/7/1866, St Mary's Church, West Brompton, Kent,[15,24] barely two weeks after Ann's death.[14] Frances and Susannah had been co-habitating since at least 1861,[12] during which time Ann was presumably a resident of the Mall House asylum. There is no further trace (as yet) of Susannah after Francis' death.[15] Children: Thomas Back (1834) of Hythe, Kent, Edward Pettit (1836) of Hendon, Kent, Archimedes Pettit (1841-1848) of Poplar, Middlesex and Alexander Pettit (1848) of St Margaret at Cliffe, Kent.[24] iv. Lydia Back, born 25/2/1811, baptised 27/3/1811 in Folkestone, Kent.[1,6] Married Henry Appleyard, 5/3/1833, Folkestone.[4] In 1881 Lydia was a widow and living with her brother, Thomas.[25] Children: Henry (1834) of Walworth, Co. Surrey, Henry Thomas (1835), harriett Ann (1837), Eliza Lydia (1839), Edward William (1841) of Greyfriars Newgate, London.[5] v. William Mercer Back, born 31/3/1813, baptised 28/4/1813 in Folkestone, Kent.[1,6] vi. Edward Back,[26] born 7/3/1815, baptised 5/4/1815 in Folkestone, Kent.[1,6,9] Emigrated to Fremantle, WA, Australia, arriving in 3/1835 on the "Fanny".[39] (according to [9] the Fanny arrived in 1837).
