MONTACUTE/MONTAGU ----------------- A genealogy of the MONTACUTE/MONTAGU family of Normandy, France, and County Somerset, England, from c.1015 to about 1310 and concentrating on my direct line. Other related Montacute's can be found in "t-montgu.txt". Reproduction for the purpose of financial gain is prohibited. I make no claim regarding the accuracy of this chart; the original sources are not free from error and a degree of guesswork is involved in genealogy. Last revision: 10/10/2003 (c) David Powell, http://roots-boots.net/ft/names.html Reference numbers are denoted by [..]'s and are listed at the end of each section (seperated by a line of *'s). Numbering begins anew with each section. The early "Montacute" was derived from the French Montaigu. The modern Montague is a latinised form of Montaigu.[1] In English, Montaigu translates literally as "Acute Mount", or Steep-Hill.[1] The family name comes from the name of the hill upon which the family estate in Normandy is found.[1] The family estate remained in the hands of the descendents of Conon Montaigu until at least the 16th century.[2] Nothing is known of the family prior or Drogo and his brothers, however the following comment may have some relevance on the family's origins: "Richard I Duke of Normandy (921-1002) gave [the village of] Montaigu to his wife Gonnor. Her grand-niece Joceline de Bolbec, who inherited it, married Roger de Montgomery. In 1054 Roger II de Montgomery married Mabille de Belleme (d.1082)."[3] Note that this refers to the _village_ of Montaigu, which may or may not have any connection to the manor of Montaigu, seat of the Montacutes/Montaigu's in Normandy. According to the Oxford "A Dictionary of English Surnames", the name is Norman and derives either from Montaigu-le-bois or from Mantaigu (Le Manche).[4] [1] "Montague Millennium", , c/o Larry Montague, . Montagu, born c.1014, Montagules-Bois, Normandy, France.[1] Married unknown. Children of Montagu: i. Conon de Montaigu,[2] born about 1035-1040,[7] probably at Montagules-Bois, Countances, Normandy, France. Conon, count of Montaigu,[5,6] took part in the first Crusade.[2,4] Was one of the three emissaries sent by Godfrey of Bouillon to the court of Emperor Alexius in 1096, as the troups of the first crusade were encamped around Byzantium.[4] Appeared as a witness in a charter in 1096 for Ida of Lorraine, widow of Count Eustace of Boulogne, & her son, Godfrey of Bouillon.[5] The charter was to acknowledge the gift in favour of the abbey of Afflighem of specific rights of some lands.[5] After the Crusade Conon and his son Lambert founded the Augustinian priory of Neufmoustier at Huy, near Liege.[2] In the thirteenth century it was believed that this foundation stemmed from a vow made by the returning crusaders during a storm at sea.[2] Died 1106.[5] Married 1st unknown. Married 2nd Ida, sister of Godfrey of Bouillon, c.1180.[5,6] Ida was the widow of Herman van Malsen (Kuijc), who died c.1080.[5,6] Children: Goscelo, Lambert - both of whom accompanied their father on the 1st crusade in 1196.[2] * ii. Drogo (Dragon) Monte-actuo, born c.1040, Montagules-Bois, Countances, Normandy, France.[1,2] iii. Ansger de Montacute, born about 1040, Montagules-Bois, Countances, Normandy, France.[3] Listed in the Domesday Book (1086) as being "of Devonshire" and thought to have been a close kinsman of Robert de Mortain, brother of King William I (William the Conquerer).[3] [1] Web page of Skiles Montague, [2] "Montague Millennium", , c/o Larry Montague, [3] "Domesday Book", 1086; Devonshire: Somerset: [4] "A History of the Crusades", Steven Runciman, 1951, Penguin Edition, 1991, p.150. [7] Conon was likely the elder son since the title of Count de Montaigu passed to him and not either of his two known brothers. Also, those who accompanied William on the 1066 invasion of England were, for the most part, younger sons. Sicne Drogo and Ansger were born around 1040, this puts a limit on when Conon was born. However, sicne he was a crusader in 1196, he was likely not born much before 1040. ************************************************* 33. Drogo (Dragon) Monte-actuo,[1-3] born c.1040,[1,2] Montagules-Bois, Countances, Normandy, France.[1] Was a companion and close friend of Robert, Earl of Mortion, who was the brother of William, Duke of Normandy.[2] Drogo's brother, Ansger, was described as a close relative of Robert, thus presumably the same family connection is true for Drogo unless the connection was by marriage.[4] Drogo accompanied Robert in his personal retinue in the 1066 invasion of Saxon England.[2] After 1066 Drogo gained several manors in Somerset, also Yarlington, Sutton-Montacute (near Ivelchester) and Thulbeer (or Torlaberie).[2] The family seat was at Shepton-Montacute in Somerset, known prior to 1066 as Logoresburg and Bishopton.[2] Castle Montacute in Somerset (near the family seat) was built by Robert de Moriton and named after Drogo.[2] Drogo's Arms consisted of a blue background with a full-length griffin, rampant, with wings spread, in bright gold.[2] 'Drogo de Montagud' was listed in the Domesday Book as a "Norman, tenant of Robert de Mortain".[6] Died 1125 at Bishopstone, Shepton-Montacute, Somerset.[1,2] Married unknown. Children of Drogo Monte-actuo: * i. William Montacuto, born c.1070, Shepton-Montacute, Somerset.[1-3,5] ii. Robert Montacuto, born about 1075, Shepton-Montacute, Somerset.[2] Married unknown. William de Montacute, born c.1150/1160, Shepton-Montacute, Somerset.[1-3,6,7] ii. Drue de Montacute,[1,2,4,8,11] born c.1160,[7] Shepton-Montacute, Somerset.[1,4] Died between 1210-1215.[1] Married Aliva de Bassett,[1-4,8-10,13] c.1205. Aliva was born c.1183, Wycombe, County Buckinghamshire.[10] Aliva married Richard Talbot after Drue died, c.1215.[10] Children: John and William (c.1209) of Montacute, Somerset.[1,12] iii. girl de Montacute, born Shepton-Montacute, Somerset.[1,2] Was a nun at Shaftsbury.[1,2] [1] "Montague Millennium", , c/o Larry Montague, [2] Web page of Skiles Montague, [3] Web page of Judy Goad, , . Also the dates given in [1] for tax records, deaths etc, are incompatable with the order William-Drue. [7] Estimated from births of children. [8] Web page of Nigel Batty-Smith, , . [9] All sources [1-4,IGI] give Drue's wife as Aliva de Bassett, however this is deemed impossible given the available information. According to [1] Drue died before 1196, at which time his children had reached adulthood (thus they were born no latter than c.1175). Sources all agree that Aliva was born c.1180 and could not have been born much earlier than this date since Aliva remarried in 1216 and subsequently had more children to her second husband.[10] The only explaination that is consistent with the available information is that Aliva de Bassett instead married Drue Jr, born around 1160. Baron Sir Simon de Montacute,[1-9,16,20,21] born c.1238,[10] Bishopstone, Shepton-Montacute, Somerset.[4,5,8,9] Simon was involved in several expeditions into Wales, including one in 1286,in which Llywelyn of Wales lost his territory and life.[1] He obtained from Edward I confirmation of the manor of Shepton-Montague in Somersetshire with the woods thereunto belonging in the forest of Selwood and a grant of several other manors also in Somersetshire and also in the counties of Dorset, Devonshire and Oxfordshire.[1] Simon made several campaigns with distinction, both in France and Scotland, during the reign of Edward I, during which he was also Governor of Corffe (Corfe) Castle in Devonshire,[1] which he was granted in 1299.[22] In the Reign of Edward II he again served in Scotland and was governor of the Castle of Beaumaris, in the isle of Anglesey, and Admiral of the King's fleet.[1] He also obtained a grant for a weekly market at his Manor of Yardlington, in Somerset, and a fair on the eve day and morrow after the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin.[1] In 1314 he obtained a license from the King to fortify his Manor at Yardlington.[1] He also owned the manors of Goat-Hill, granted to him by Edward I, and Laymore in Somerset.[1] Simon bore as his Coat of Arms the original shield of his ancestor Drogo, however, he changed them to "Argent (white) three fusils (elongated diamonds) in fess gules (red)" joined in a line.[1] In 1301 Simon, along with other Norman barons, put his name and seal to a letter of complaint to Pope Boniface VIII.[1] Was summoned to parliament in 1315, soon after which he died.[1] Died 26/9/1316,[1-5,8,21] and was buried at Bruton Priory, Montacute, Somerset,[4] 2/11/1316.[23] Married 1st Hawise de St Amand,[1,2,6,8,16,21] daughter of Almeric, Lord St. Amand, before 1270.[22,23,24] Died c.1287.[23] Married 2nd Isabella,[4,11,21] after 1287.[23] Was still alive in the spring of 1290.[21,23] Some sources claim that Simon married Aufrica of Man,[22] however reliable secondary sources and primary sources give no evidence of this.[23] See elsewhere for a discussion on this.[12] Children of Simon de Montacute and Hawise de St Amand: * i. Isabella de Montacute, born c.1260, Shepton-Montacute, Somerset.[4,7,14,19,20] ii.
