William McDonald Jr, s/o William & Ann Mary, born 1824, is one of the two known William's to have been born in India within a few years of 1821/1822, the date my ancestor, William McDonald, appears to have been born in India. After researching both William Sr and his oldest son, Charles William, I was able to identify William Jr, both with his marriage in India in 1847 and his death there in 1862. It seems unlikely that this William ever left India, in fact apart from a short time as an infant, it appears this William spent his entire life in the Bombay presidency and so alas has been eliminated as a candidate for my William. After eliminating both William (1824) & his brother, Charles William (1822), I ceased my research into this family (hence the lack of information other than birth/baptisms for the other brothers).

The East India Company had a maritime service, which from the 1680s was known as the Bombay Marine Service. The Bombay Marines were an armed protection force, their territory spanning the China Seas and the Persian Gulf. The Service was responsible for keeping pirates under control, for troop carrying and for marine surveys. In 1830 the Service became the Indian Navy, then in 1863 it was demoted to the role of the noncombatant Bombay Marine with harbour duties only, but in the 1890s it was restored as the Royal Indian Navy. A small marine force existed in Bengal and Calcutta ports handling navigation and hydrographic surveys. The Company ceased to finance ships in the early 18th century and merchants, including some East India Company directors, built their ships, provided crews and chartered them back to the company.[147]
