The following chart is an attempt to piece together the Allman entries in the very fragmentary Great Yarmouth Parish Registers pre-1720. There are unfortunately many gaps in the PR's - at some stage the PR's were exposed to water and whole pages and even sections were rendered blank, sometimes covering many decades. Many of the remaining pages have been so badly damaged as to make deciphering the entries somewhat uncertain.
Baptisms begin 1565 (surviving pre-1720 all faded & poor condition). Missing: c.1580-2/1592, 9/1604-10/1639, 5/1653-1686, 1720-1734. Existing: 1565-c.1580, 3/1592-8/1604, 11/1639-5/1653, 1686-1720, 1734+. Marriages begin 1558. Very poor condition: 1558-1611, 1700-1720. Missing: 1611-1666, 1721-1754. Existing: 1588-1611, 1666-1720, 1754+. Burials: Available transcriptions begin 1721.
This makes any attempt at constructing a genealogy rather speculative in parts. The following chart should not therefore be taken as definite but rather as one possible way of piecing together the existing fragmentary records. With gaps as much as 40 years there is a high degree of uncertainity and it is quite possible that there are errors in the chart.

The following family fragment appears in Norwich in the 1500's. Is there any connection between this family and the Great Yarmouth Allman's? Could John & Cicely be the John Allman who is the earliest link in the Great Yarmouth chart? This would presuppose that William who married Ela Bolton remarried in 1573. There was a lot of movement between Norwich and Great Yarmouth. Alternatively, John (below who married Cicely) could have been a cousin of John Allman of Great Yarmouth (see further down this page). Even wilder speculation would suggest the two John's (born c.1500?) were great-grandsons of the John Allman who was made a Freeman of Great Yarmouth in 1447. In c.1554 (5&6 Philip&Mary) a John Allman, Scrivener, was bound as an apprentice for 7 years. Apprentices were usually between 12-20 when they were bound, suggesting a dob of 1534-1542, however even infants could be bound as an apprentice. Married men could not be bound as apprentices, so this John cannot be the one, below, married to Cicely. Presumably he was a son of John.

1.1. John Allman,[8] born before 1525. (Possibly married twice if Cicely was not the mother of William, baptised 1543). Married Cicely Tesemounde, 27/8/1545, St Clement, Norwich, Co Norfolk.[8]

Children of John Allman & Cicely Tesemounde:

i.

William Allman baptised 6/11/1543, Saint Peter Mancroft, Norwich, Co Norfolk.[8] William Almand married Ela Bolton, 15/10/1570, St George Tombland, Norwich, Co Norfolk.[8]

ii.
John Allman,[98] born between 1534-1554. John, a Scrivener, was bound as an apprentice for 7 years in c.1554 (5&6 Philip&Mary).[98] Possibly the John Alman who married Joan Davy, 14/10/1565, Swaffham, Co Norfolk.[8]

iii.

Alicia Almon,[8] born c.1555. Married Thomas Bower, 10/10/1574, St Andrew, Norwich, Co Norfolk.[8]

iv.

Elena Almon,[8] born c.1555. Married Richard Duttye, 10/7/1575, St Stephen, Norwich, Co Norfolk.[8]

v.

Jana Allman, baptised 20/9/1561, St Andrew, Norwich, Co Norfolk.[8]

There is no further trace of this family (although a John Allman married Jane Blomfield, 1634, Saint Simon And Saint Jude, Norwich.[2,8]), however available Norwich PR's are patchy in this time period.

The earliest known reference to an Allman in Great Yarmouth was John Allman, a Freeman of Yarmouth in 1447 and 1448.[56] John was the bailiff of Great Yarmouth in 1473, and his will of 1477 shows a wife Margaret and that he had considerable property in Hopton, Corton, Brotherton (sic) and Great Yarmouth.[98] Whether John was a native of Great Yarmouth or an immigrant from elsewhere is unknown and since this predates the start of the parish registrars and there is no earlier reference in either wills or the Freemen lists it is likely impossible to know. Great Yarmouth was an open port so there are no manorial records which, elsewhere, provide a useful pre-PR source. The name Allman does occur elsewhere in England, however there was also a sizable influx of Dutch immigrants around this time, fleeing religious persecution and seeking sanctuary with the somewhat more tolerant English. There are a few scattered references to Allman's elsewhere in Norfolk prior to 1700, including a family in Norwich in the mid 1500's. It is possible, tho' not certain (and certainly not provable) that John was an ancestor of the Great Yarmouth Allman's below.

1. John Allman, born before 1525 (probably born between 1515-1520 from est. births of his sons). Tailor.[54] (Occupation & name given on the granting of his son, Ralph, as a Freeman). Presumably a Freeman of Great Yarmouth since his son, Ralph, was a Freeman by birth which implies his father was also a Freeman of GY. Married unknown.

Children of John Allman & unknown (only Ralph is certain, other's are speculative):

i.

Ralph Allman, born c.1545,[54] possibly Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk. Freeman of Great Yarmouth, 1572, by birth.[54]
* ii.
John Allman,[52,54] born before 1550 (probably 1540-1545).

ii.

William Allman, born before 1555 (probably 1545-1550). Married Margaret Payne, 6/8/1573, St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk.[8,52]
Children: (a)

Elizabeth Allman, baptised 19/9/1577, St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk.[52] Possibly the female (forename unreadable) Allman, married Joseph (surname unreadable), 31/1/1603, St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk.[52]

iii.

Elizabeth Allman,[52] born before 1560 (probably c.1555). Married George Flynn, 5/12/1576, St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk.[52] {Elizabeth may have been the widow of John (1.1)}

iv.

Gideon (Gidyon) Allman,[52] born before 1570 (probably between 1560-1565). Married Jane Beckett, 18/11/1588, St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk.[52]

1.1. John Allman,[52,54] born before 1550 (probably 1540-1545). (John is not listed as a Freeman of Great Yarmouth. Does this mean Ralph, the only son of John Sr who was known to be a Freeman of GY (by birth), was the eldest child?). Possibly died c.1575 {an Elizabeth Allman married 1576, was she John's widow or his sister? Also none of his children were Freemen of GY, a grandson became a Freeman by purchase, consistent with John's children being raised by a step-father or a relative} Married Elizabeth.[52]

Children of John Allman & Elizabeth:
*
i.

John Allman, baptised 19/9/1568, St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk.[52]

ii.

Margaret Allman, baptised 21/11/1570, St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk.[52]

iii.

William Allman, baptised 22/3/1571, St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk.[52]

iv.
Gideon (Gidyon) Allman, baptised 21/11/1575, St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk.[52] Married Elizabeth.[52] {Marriage and children may be for a 2nd marriage of  Gideon Sr, married 1st Jane Beckett, 1588 (above)}
Children: (a)

Albert Allman, baptised 13/3/1596, St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk.[52]
(b)
Elizabeth Allman, baptised 25/7/1602, St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk.[52]

1.1.1. John Allman, baptised 19/9/1568, St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk.[52] Ropemaker, 1605, 1632, 1634, 1637.[53,104] Does not appear to have been a Freeman (his son, John Jr, became a Freeman by purchase[54] rather than by birth). John did, however, take on several apprentices:
John Matson of Yarmouth to John Allman roper of Yarmouth. 8 years from 25th March last. Double apparel and 20s. 16 April 1605.
John son of Henry Browne of Freethorpe to John Allman ropemaker and wife Agnes. To age of 24. Double apparel and £4. 11th Dec 1632.
William son of Alder Johnson sailor of Yarmouth to John Alman ropemaker of Yarmouth and wife Anne. 7 years from date. Double apparel. 2nd Feb.1634.[104]
John's will was dated 2/11/1637 and proven 5/12/1642.[53] Was alive 1640 (his son, John, was described as "John Alman junr"[54]). Died 1642.[53] {Whilst John's will directed that his body be interred in the church &/or chancellery, there is no evidence this ever happened. A transcription of all surviving St Nicholas burials made in 1917 did not include John's, which would be expected if he had been buried in the church or chancellery. Evidently John's burial was relegated to a plot in the graveyard and the marker had vanished or been rendered unreadable by 1917.[51]}
"John Allman, ye elder of Gt Yarmouth in ye county of Norfolk, ropemaker, being weak of body but of good & perfect memory (God be praised) do make & ordain this my last will & testament in manner & form following, that is to say first I commend my soul unto ye hands of God my maker expecting {word uncertain} assuredly through the only merit of Jesus Christ my saviour to be made partaker of life everlasting. And I commend my body to ye earth whereof it is made which I desire may be interred either in ye church or chancell of ye church of Gt Yarmouth aforesaid.
Item - I give & bequeath unto Ann my loving wife all of my messuage or tenement with the ________ {several words, unreadable} wherein I now dwell situate in Gt Yarmouth aforesaid & to her heirs & assigns for ever.
Item - I give & bequeath unto ye said Ann my wife (after my funeral expenses & debts discharged & ye legacies of this my last will hereafter named by me in this my last will hereafter specified to be given, satisfied & paid) all ________ {several words, unreadable} my goods & chattells whatsoever to ye only use & ________ {several words, unreadable} of ye said Anne my wife her {word uncertain} executors, administrators & assigns for ever. And I do make and ordain ye said Ann my wife sole executrix of this my last will and testament. And Mr. Edward ____ {surname unreadable} alderman and burgess of Great Yarmouth aforesaid whom I desire to be assistant & helpful to my wife after my decease, and for his pains I give & bequeath unto him fourty shillings to be paid to him three months next after my decease. In witness whereof I have here unto set my hand & seal the 2nd day of November in the 13th year of ye reign of our sovereign Lord Charles of England, Scotland, France & Ireland, king, defender of ye faith. AD 1637. In ye presence of Henry Codd, Anthony Barker, the mark of John Brand.
Will proved 5/12/1642."[53]
Married Agnes Miron, 14/6/1604, St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk.[52] Agnes was also known as Ann (see [104] where both names are used). Agnes/Ann died 1656.[53] Ann's will, dated 1656, leaves her estate to her son John, then to grandson Thomas (either the s/o of Thomas Sr or John), and also mentions grandchildren Mary (unknown), Elizabeth (d/o either John or Thomas) and Margaret (d/o John).[53]

Children of John Allman & Agnes/Ann Miron (all children are speculative):
*
i.

John Allman,[52,53] born between 1604-1620. {Upper date set by baptism of eldest known child}

ii.

Christopher Allman,[52] born between 1604-1620. {Upper date set by baptism of eldest known child} Married Ann.[52]
Children: (a)

Christopher Allman, baptised 25/10/1640, St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk.[52]

iii.

Thomas Allman,[52] born between 1604-1620. {Upper date set by baptism of eldest known child} Married Ann.[52]
Children: (a)

Thomas Allman/Allinson, baptised 12/5/1641, St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk.[52]
(b)
Elizabeth Allman, baptised 21/8/1642, St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk.[52] Married George Baily, 10/9/1667, St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk.[8,52]

iv.

Unknown Allman #1,[52] born between 1604-1620. {Upper date set by baptism of eldest known child} Married Jane.[52] {Unknown #1 cannot be John, Thomas or Unknown #2 as there would be a clash with their known children (ie: too far apart to be twins, too close to be siblings), there is no clash with Christopher, however that would imply a 2nd marriage for him}
Children: (a)

Eliza Allman, baptised 19/3/1642, St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk.[52]
(b)
Clara (sp?) Allman, baptised 21/9/1643, St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk.[52]

v.

Unknown Allman #2,[52] born between 1604-1623. {Upper date set by baptism of eldest known child}. Died before 1673.[53] Married Mary.[52] Mary died 1677, Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk.[53] Mary's will was dated 14/7/1673 and proven 5/1677.[53] Mary's married daughter, Ann, was the only Allman named in her will.[53]
"Mary Allman [Left to son-in-law George Diennie {possibly Dunn}, then to her daughter Anne, his wife]
... My messuage late called the Kings Head, lying in G.Y. aforesaid, now in the occupancy of Anne Gill, widow, with appurtenances. And after the decease of the longer liver of these the said George & Ann, I give and devise the same ____ {unreadable} with their appurtenances to all the children of her the said Anne which shall be ____ {several unreadable words} or have any issue of their bodies then living & to their heirs & ___ {unreadable} equally to be divided amongst them. And for want of sure issue to the right heirs of the said Anne for sure.
Item - I give & devise to the said Anne my daughter during her natural life all that my messuage with ____ {unreadable} tenament situate in Gt Yarmouth aforesaid, now in my own occupation. And after her decease to all the children of the said Ann which shall be then living or have already issued, then living, & to their heirs forever, equally to be divided amongst them. And for want of sure issue to the right heirs of the said Ann forever. Provided alwards {uncertain} & under this condition, that they, the said Anne and her children & sure other issues whomever the said last ____ {several words unreadable} pay to Hannah Muuds my half sister, 40/- yearly, and to George Gooch, my brother-in-law, 20/- yearly during their natural lives ____ {several words unreadable} To be paid every year at or in the market cross of G.Y. and for default of payment, they can enter the sd {said} house ____ {unreadable} until they receive payment _____ {unreadable}
I appoint William Bullman, gent, my loving cousin and the said Anne my daughter, the executors. & I give Wm Bullman £5. The residue _____ {unreadable} may be sold for the best price ____ {word or words unreadable}. Dated 14/7/1673. Proved 5/1677."[53]
{Unknown #2 cannot be John because John had only one wife, who survived him; nor can he be Unknown #1 since there would be a clash with known children. Christopher is unlikely because while Ann's (below) father's name cannot be deciphered from the PR, it does not look like it could be Christopher (or Chris). That leaves Thomas as a possibility. Thomas' wife was Ann - could she have been Mary Ann? This would presuppose that both of Thomas' known children, Thomas Jr & Elizabeth, died young since they are not mentioned in Mary's will, which leaves part of her estate to two of her nieces - presumably her own children would have had a better claim. Thomas' wife Ann was not Mary Ann then she may have died 1642/1643 and he remarried to Mary early 1643; omitting step-children from one's will is more feasable, depending on their father's will which may have placed stipulations on how his widow could dispose of what she inherited from him.[53]}
Children: (a)

Ann Allman,[53] baptised 17/12/1643, St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk.[52] Married George Dunne, before 1673.[53]

1.1.1.1. John Allman,[52] born between 1604-1620. {Upper date set by baptism of eldest known child} Died after 1666 (mentioned in the will of his son, Thomas, dated 1666[53]) and probably before 1677 (his widow appears to have remarried, 1677). In 1640 John Alman Junr became a Freeman of Great Yarmouth, by purchase.[54]
"Admissions of freemen or free burgesses of the Borough of Great Yarmouth have probably been made ever since the town received its first charter in 1207/1208.
There were three main advantages in being a freeman which remained unchanged until the passing of the Representation of the People Act, 1832:
1. A Freeman was exempt from the payment of various duties on ships and goods coming into the port and from certain tolls levied on the markets.
2. Only Freeman were enfranchised for parliamentary and mayoral elections.
3. Only Freemen could be elected to the governing body of the borough - to become Mayor, Bailiff, Recorder, Town Clerk, Town Councillor or a juror.
On admission, freemen swore an oath of loyalty. This dates from about 1500 and its form is unique to Great Yarmouth. It runs:
'Thus hear ye bailiffs and all good men that I, _____ shall bear faith and truth to the king and his heirs with my body and goods, the counterfeiting of the king's seal I shall not see nor know, the king's coin I shall not counterfeit nor impair, the franchises of Great Yarmouth, the good customs, usages and ordinances of the same with my body and goods I shall maintain obey and keep, I shall be at the commandment of the bailiffs and their ministers when I shall be summoned to enquire upon any inquest either for the king or between parties or for any other cause, I shall not conceal nor cover nor cloak any strangers' goods in prejudice of this franchise, if I know any traitor, spy, thief, or any evildoer I shall give warning and notice thereof to the bailiffs of this town for the time being or to their ministers. All this shall I hold and do for my part so God help me.'
In the 16th century gaining admission as a Freeman was not difficult. It could be claimed through birth or servitude (sons of freemen, provided they were born after their fathers had become a freeman, and apprentices of freemen who had duly served their masters for seven years, could claim the right to be admitted), through marriage into a freeman's family, through the possession of a burgage or by purchase. By the 18th century all claims except birth, servitude and purchase had become obsolete."[55]
Married Elizabeth.[52] An Elizabeth Allman, widow of Great Yarmouth, married Thomas Atkinson, widower, 6/3/1677, St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk.[52]

Children of John Allman & Elizabeth (later children are speculative):

i.

Thomas Allman, baptised 11/4/1641, St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk.[52] Died 1667.[53] Master mariner.[53] Thomas' will, dated 1666 and proven 9/8/1667, left his estate to his wife Elizabeth until she married again, then to his daughter Elizabeth, no mention made of any other children.[53]
"In the name of God Amen the fifth day of March in the Nineteenth yeare of the reign of our Sovereign Lord King Charles the second over England. I, Thomas Allman of Yarmouth in the county of Norfolk, Master mariner, do make & declare this my last will & testament in form following (that is to say).
First & principally I give & bequeath my soule
into the hands of Allmighty God (trusting assuredly) through thee alone all sufficient meritts of my ____ {may be alone or only} saviour Jesus Christ for full remission, pardon & forgiveness of all my sins; for my body to the earth from whence it came to be decently interred at the discretion of my executive hereafter named. And (as) for the worldly goods & chattels which the Lord hath bin {been} pleased to endow mee {me} withall, I give & bequeath the same in form following (that is to say).
Item I give & bequeath the house & tenement with the appurtenances situate in Yarmouth on the East side of the Fore street there, immediately from & after my father John Allman his death & decease to my loving wife Elizabeth Allman for long tyme {time} as she shall continue my widow & immediately from & after her intermarriage with any person next after my decease, I will & declare the said house & tenement with the appurtenances to remain {word uncertain} & come to my daughter Elizabeth & the heirs of her body, lawfully begotten & to be begotten for ever, and as for the rest of my goods & chattels as well movables personal ____ {unreadable word} personal. My debts, legacies {word uncertain} & funeral expenses being first {word uncertain} paid & discharged. I give & bequeath the same unto my loving wife Elizabeth Allman & my daughter Elizabeth Allman whom I make & hereby ordain ioynt {joint} executrixs of this my last will & testament. If my executrix aforesaid thinks fit, I give & bequeath out of my said goods & chattels to my mate John Brown the sum of ten pounds, witness my hands & seal the same year aforesaid {might be 'abovesaid'} 1666. Witnessed by Thomas (possibly Warnes) and John Cooke. Will proved 17/8/1667."[53]
Married Elizabeth.[53]
Children: (a)

Elizabeth Allman,[53] born between 1660-1666 {range set by date of her father's will and by assuming her father was at least 20yo when she was born}

ii.

Eliza Allman, baptised 18/1/1642, St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk.[52]

iii.

Elizabeth Allman, baptised 30/4/1647, St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk.[52] Possibly married George Baily, 10/9/1667, St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk.[52]

iv.

Margaret Allman,[53] baptised 1/5/1651, St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk.[52]
*
v.

John Allman, of Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk.[52] Born between 5/1653-1656.
* vi.
William Allman, born after 1653.

1.1.1.1.1. John Allman, of Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk.[52] Born between 5/1653-1656. {GY baptismal records no longer exist for 5/1653-1686, setting the earliest year of birth and his marriage in 1676 sets the later limit, assuming he was 20yo when he married}. Married Mary Allen/Allan, 9/3/1676, St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk.[52] Mary was a widow.[52]

Children of John Allman & Mary Allen (earlier children are speculative):

i.

John Allman,[52] born before 1695. Married Elizabeth.[52] {John, c.1655, presumably named a son after himself, although could be the s/o William}
Children: (a)

Elizabeth Allman, baptised 26/7/1715, St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk.[52]

ii.

Rachel Allman,[52] born abt.1690-1700 {based on marriage date}. Married Robert Tuley (of Great Yarmouth), 8/11/1719 or 29/11/1719, St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk.[52] Neither Rachel or Robert had been previously married.[52] {Possibly the d/o John since the name does not appear amongst the descendents of John's brother, William}

iii.

Sarah Allman,[52] born before 1700. {Could equally well be the d/o either John or William, William however does not have a known grandchild named Sarah suggesting she may be John's child}
Children: (a)

Joseph Allman.[52] Died 1723 & buried 7/2/1723, St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk.[52] Joseph, a base-born child {likely between 2-5yo since described as "child" rather than infant (<2yo) or son (>5yo)}, was recorded as the son of Joseph Woolstone.[52]

iv.

Thomas Allman, baptised 25/6/1699, St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk.[52] {The only child confirmed by baptismal records}

1.1.1.1.2. William Allman,[52] born between 1653-1668. {GY baptismal records no longer exist for 5/1653-1686, setting the earliest year of birth and his 1st child born no later than 1688 sets the later limit, assuming he was 20yo at the time}. Married Elizabeth.[52] Elizabeth died before 1709. Married 2nd Mary Mayhew (single woman), 15/6/1709, St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk.[52] William was a widower.[52]

Children of William Allman & Elizabeth (most children are speculative):

i.

Thomas Allman, of Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk.[52] Probably born between 1680-1688. Married Mary Greenes, 24/10/1709, St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk.[52] Mary of Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk.[52] Neither Thomas or Mary had been previously married.[52] {William's presumed brother, John, had a son, Thomas, baptised 1699. William was the only other adult male Allman known to have been in GY at the time}

ii.

Elizabeth Allman,[52] born abt.1680-1690. Married William Cook (of Great Yarmouth), 24/11/1709, St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk.[52] Elizabeth was single, William was a widower.[52] {Elizabeth is likely to be the d/o William & Elizabeth, rather than John & Mary, named after her mother}

iii.

Mary Allman ("Hallman"), baptised 29/1/1696, St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk.[52] {The only child confirmed by baptismal records}

iv.

William Allman, born 1697, Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk.[see William's chart for sources] {Presumably a son of William Sr rather than John since William is more likely to have a son named William than John. William, b.1697, also did not have a son named John suggesting his father was not John. William's placement here is speculative and he could easily be the son of John}

v.

Joseph Allman,[52] probably born before 1717 {not listed as child at burial & no parents listed, so presumably an adult, at least 21yo}. Died 1737 & buried 15/10/1737, St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Co Norfolk.[52] {Likely a brother of William (b.1697) since William named two sons Joseph}
